Five Things You NEED to Have When You Are Sick

Five things you need to have when you are sick.

This flu season is just going on and on this year. I was down for the count a few weeks ago and I honestly don’t remember the last time I caught something that made me feel THAT bad. As soon as I felt better, I started seeing my friends posting that they were coming down with it one by one as well. (BTW – these were internet friends, so I am not responsible for passing it along to them!) As miserable as I was, there were a few things that made me feel better so I am sharing them with you…cuz I’m nice like that. Here are my five things you need to have when you are sick:

netflix

1) Netflix

This is number one for a reason! I don’t know if you’ve been home and watching TV during the day anytime recently, but there is nothing on. I mean nothing. While I would have loved to have caught up on some reading, my head hurt waaaay to much to even try reading. All I wanted to do was lay in bed and watch TV.  And when I was at the worst of it, I wanted to watch somewhat mindless TV – not some intellectual documentary that required paying attention and thinking. My days were filled with episodes of Friends, Grey’s Anatomy, Army Wives, and Burn Notice. I tried watching Criminal Minds (which I love) but after a few wonky dreams I decided that was not a great choice with a fever. This whole thing pretty much left me wondering why we are paying for a cable package when everything I watched was from Netflix!

oscillococcinum

2) Oscillococcinum

I’ll be honest – I have no idea how to pronounce this but I love it. I have used Boiron’s ColdCalm a number of times and always felt like it helped a lot so I was prepared and had a box of Oscillococcinum in the medicine closet just in case. I forgot all about it until the second day I was sick so I didn’t start taking it as early as I should have but I still noticed improvement once I started.  You can bet that I will be grabbing a box of this every flu season, just in case.

epsom salt

3) Epsom Salt Baths

My whole body hurt with this fever. I don’t remember being this sore from an illness since I was a kid. I just could not get comfortable except when I took a hot bath with Epsom salts. I used 2 cups of Epsom salts and 1 cup of baking soda and added different essential oils depending on the time of day and my mood (lavender and  cedarwood when I was trying to go to sleep, eucalyptus when I felt congested).

heated blanket

4)  A Heated Blanket

I was cold all. the. time. I just could not get warm (except when I was in the hot bath mentioned above). I was so glad to have a heated blanket to wrap around me and put on high. Since the temps still keep fluctuating between 60’s and 30’s here, I think I will leave it out for at least another month!

hint water

5) Hint Water

I know how important it is to stay hydrated when you are sick. I make an effort to stay away from sugar and caffeine when I am sick and try to stick to water, but it gets kind of boring after a while. I love Hint water because it has literally just a “hint” of flavor and is all natural. It feels like I’m giving myself a naughty treat even though it is good for me. I love the flavors offered like Blood Orange and Watermelon.

So while I hope you don’t get the flu anytime soon, here is my list of five things that made me feel a little better!
