My son, the bug lover…
What do you do when you find a bug in your house? Typically, my main objective is to remove it as fast as possible by whatever means are available (i.e. – Making Jay do it).
If I am unable to pass the bug removal duties off to someone else, I have a bug vacuum (they’re available at Bed Bath & Beyond if you are as bug phobic as I am) that takes care of the offending little critter with the flick of a switch.
It seems that, as an ironic joke, God has given me a child who is utterly in LOVE with all bugs. Now I know what you’re thinking: Get over yourself, Maureen – all five year old boys love bugs. I realize that, but LJ takes it to a whole new level as he proved last week when a June bug found its way into our house.
LJ spotted the bug as it slowly made it’s way across the kitchen floor, stopping to take a late morning siesta under the table. He immediately started making the case for keeping it as a pet.
I tried to explain why a June bug really wouldn’t be a good pet: I have no idea what they eat, they really need to be outside and fly freely, etc. We finally compromised and decided that we would put it in the backyard and it could be an outside pet.
I looked around to find a piece of paper and a cup to scoop up the bug. LJ started for his shoes and asked if we were going to the store before we put the bug outside.
“The store? What store?” I asked,
“The store where they sell the invisible doggie fences!” LJ replied like it was a given.
“What?” I asked, completely baffled.
LJ then went on to explain how we needed to get an invisible fence and a collar for the bug so that it wouldn’t leave the yard.
Right.
I probably shouldn’t ever let him see me use the bug vacuum.
This is a great story. Put a smile on my face before my day of work. Thank you! Your son sounds like a really cute, loving kid. Good luck with the bugs!
Wow! Do they make special fences to keep them out of your yard.
