When Binging Can Actually Be a Good Thing

When you hear the word “binge”, immediately images of someone binge eating or binge drinking come to mind. Neither of these of particularly good things to do, right? But lately, I’ve been binging in a different way – and it’s actually been a good thing!

I’m talking about binge watching TV series!

Now, if I were plopped in front of the TV 24/7 and ignoring all of my obligations, this would probably be a negative thing too. But I’ve been actually getting a lot of things done while I’ve been binging watching.

Because Netflix is available on a variety of devices, I can take whatever series I’m engrossed in with me wherever I am.

So I set aside a day to clean my office and made the paper filing and closet sorting go by so much faster with Season 3 of Orange is the New Black.  Once I had finished that series, I found out that NCIS had been added to the line up.  Now, I was a bit late to discover NCIS and didn’t start watching until quite a few seasons in. I have caught many of the older episodes here and there on cable channels but they were rarely in order and I know I’ve missed a bunch. I love being able to watch the whole series, in order, on my time. NCIS was my company while I cleaned out the fridge, organized my closet, folded the HUGE mound of laundry that was the result of a week’s vacation, and scheduled upcoming social media posts.

How am I able to take my binge watching habit with me while I do so many different activities?

The fact that Netflix is available on our main TV via the Roku, in my office on my computer (that second monitor is coming in really handy!!), and wherever else I happen to be thanks to my iPad, means Netflix can go wherever I want!

Now I’ve even got Josh in on the binge watching action.

dragons race to the edge

He just discovered Dragons: Race to the Edge. It’s the follow up to How to Train Your Dragon and features Hiccup and Toothless (everyone’s favorite dragon!). After watching the first episode, he complained about the cliffhanger ending and how he “couldn’t possibly wait until the following week” to find out what happens next! Imagine how thrilled he was when I showed him that the whole first season is just a click away on Netflix!! Now, when he has down time between camps he can fill in with his new favorite series.

I’m thinking binging might finally shake all of the negative connotations that have plagued it for years. Binging can actually be a good thing, right?

  1. Oh yes, we are always watching Netflix. My oldest son is obsessed with cooking shows on there.

  2. I definitely tend to binge watch shows on Netflix. For some series I have to wait for my boyfriend to visit though because he doesn’t want to miss an episode.

  3. I don’t have netflix, but I have heard only good things about Orange is the New Black, I definitely want to see it. (I’m not a big cartoon person either to be honest. I have been a lifelong fan of the horror genre, it’s the only thing I got into trouble for as a kid. I have always been an insomniac and I would stay up late watching horror movies! – another good thing to binge watch in my book!)

  4. Netflix is amazing for binge watching. It’s really awesome. I have binged and finished Gilmore Girls, Suits, 24, Pretty Little Liars, and I’m now on NCIS haha. Its amazing.

  5. I love binge watching my Netflix shows. I just finished the third season of Orange is the New Black. I am enjoying The Tomorrow People as well.

  6. I signed up for Netflix about 6 months ago and I have never watched anything on it. I either forget or mostly have no time. I am thinking I will need to cancel, but my friends seem to binge watch all the time

  7. I love Jethro! I started rewatching Season 1 of NCIS recently while refinishing my staircase. I’ll be all caught up before I know it!
