How to Hide TV Wires and Power Cords

I admit that I can be resistant to change. I like to get things set up the way I like them and then leave them that way! While most people are always raring to get new furniture, I like to hold onto my comfy favorites until they are completely worn out. So you can image that my enthusiasm for this whole “smart-flatscreen-LED-TV” trend was a bit tempered by the fact that I would have to get rid of my favorite TV armoire in our master bedroom and have ugly TV wires hanging down my wall.

I managed to soothe my pain by purchasing a kind of unique bookcase that was a sharp white and offered additional storage space. But I was having a really hard time getting over the unsightly TV and cable cords that were visible. Our house was built in the mid-90’s and is not at all wired for today’s electronic world.  People have suggested running the wires through the wall, but anything having to do with moving electric wires makes me nervous.

But luckily, there is an easy solution for hiding those ugly flatscreen TV wires – and you don’t have to be an electrician to do it!

I was sent a Legrand in Wall Power Kit to install and test out. Before I launch into my review, let me say a little about some things to consider before you undertake this project.

First, the box says you don’t need a drill – that a tool is enclosed in the package. This is sort of true. There is a tool to cut the circle in your drywall but the hand attachment stripped after Jay made three rotations with it. He just put the blade part on his drill and easily cut through the drywall BUT if you don’t have a drill, you might want to borrow one to have on hand.

Second, make sure your wires are long enough to reach the plugs you will be using. We decided to run the cable wires and Roku power cord through the wall. (The system has a dedicated plug for your TV power cord.) I assumed they would be long enough but when we ran them back to the opening and then down through the wall and back out, they were just a tad too short. I ran out to Best Buy and grabbed a new HDMI cable and micro USB for the Roku which did add an additional $45 to the total for the project. The end result made it totally worth it for me, but I just want you to be aware of the possible added expense.

Lastly, the box says you can install it in 30 minutes. I suppose it is possible, if everything goes perfectly the first time you try it. Not counting my half hour jaunt to Best Buy for the extra wires, the whole project took us more like 60 minutes and I consider Jay pretty handy. So, like with all home improvement projects, double the recommended amount of time when you are scheduling this installation.

How to Hide TV Wires with a Kit

First you are going to need to purchase the Legrand In Wall Power Kit.

Next, gather a drill, any new wires you might need, a screwdriver and the lay the contents of the kit out on the floor within reach.

The directions are on the package and are actually pretty easy! But here is a video that gives more detail:

We are pretty pleased with the final product!

  1. This looks like a great idea and I would love to not have the wires showing. I need to get the Legrand In Wall Power Kit.

  2. I’d love to have something like this at home to keep the wires all organized! I don’t like seeing them scattered all over. This is definitely a lovely solution to that.

  3. I need to get this for my house. We recently mounted a TV on the wall in the family room. I hate how the cords are visible.
