Halloween Candy Dentist Buy Back Program

So how much Halloween candy do you wind up with in your house? We usually end up with a ridiculous amount.  Between all of the pre-Halloween activities: Trick-or-Treat at the museum, the zoo, the classroom party, being boo-ed by our neighbors, and the fact that I always over buy out of fear of being the house that runs out before the night is over, the amount of candy around here can get obscene.

LJ is not a kid who goes wild over candy, but he will eat it if it’s around.  And sadly, so will Jay and I.

That’s why I was thrilled to hear about a candy buy back program started four years ago by a Wisconsin dentist who offered to buy kids’ Halloween candy for a dollar a pound.  This little idea started by one lone dentist (despite the protests of his kids) has grown into a full fledged movement with participating dentists in just about every state.

But wait – it gets even better.  What happens to all of the “purchased” candy?  It is sent to Operation Gratitude where it is sent to deployed military!   Talk about a win-win for everyone.
