The Goldmoor Inn – Galena, Illinois

Tucked away in the northwest corner of Illinois is the hidden gem otherwise known as the town of Galena. Galena has a charm that is difficult to find these days and visiting truly feels like stepping back in time to a place when life was simple and electronics did not rule our every moment. When visiting Galena, the Goldmoor Inn is the perfect place to stay to further that sense of relaxation and pampering.

My fellow blogger, Mel from Outnumbered Three to One and I recently had the opportunity to visit Galena and stay at the Goldmoor Inn thanks to a generous invitation from the owners, Slobo and Birgit Radin. Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi river, The inn is located at 9001 N. Sand Road in Galena and is one of the nicest bed and breakfasts I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. At first glance, it looks like a European castle, complete with a turret and “drawbridge” leading to the door of the turret.

Each of the 18 suites (including two log cabins and three English cottages) include a king bed, a cozy fireplace, two-person whirlpool tub, an in-room kitchenette, and either a balcony or outside patio.

Take a tour of my suite with me:

Each suite has its own theme – everything from a rustic cabin motif to the “Chef’s Quarters” just above the kitchen. The included breakfast, perfectly cooked by Slobo, may be taken in-room or at the Inn’s beautifully appointed dining room. Slobo is an excellent cook and creates breakfast treats that are as beautiful as they are tasty.

I found the Goldmoor Inn to be especially comfortable and welcoming. The Radins have mastered the art of being friendly and offering advice when asked without being intrusive. I especially enjoyed having the opportunity to visit with them at mealtime and encourage everyone to ask Slobo about the history of how the original A frame came to be built. (He tells it very well, so I won’t offer up any spoilers here!)

While the Goldmoor Inn is obviously known as a romantic place to get away with someone special or a beautiful location to hold a wedding, it is also known for its scrumptious dining. The menu is seasonally driven and the chef cooks everything to perfection! While I had the salmon and the most amazing risotto I’ve ever tasted, the chef told me the Duck L’Orange is his specialty. I was wishing I had enough room to try both!!

I hope to be able to return to the Goldmoor Inn again as there is so much to do and discover in the area and it was just the perfect spot to slow down and relax.  If you’ve ever visited the Goldmoor, I’d love to hear about your experience as well!

  1. This looks delightful! We usually stay in Dubuque when we go to Galena but have wanted to stay in Galena and do a wine tour! We are going to look into staying here- we totally enjoyed your IG takeover photos as well!

  2. It is amazing that a great place like that is run by a couple who give you personal attention. Those food choices make it a destination that i would seek out even though i had never heard of it before.

  3. My hubs is from Illinois, I’ll have to ask him if he’s been to Galena – it looks quaint and cute! The food looks pretty yummy!

  4. If I would have the chance to visit this place, I would choose to stay in one of the log cabins. It has always been a dream of mine to own a log cabin in the woods, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Staying in a log cabin would make a dream come true, even for a few short days. Thanks for letting me know about the Goldmoor Inn.
