Culver’s Fish Fry – Yay or Nay?

Is Culver's Fish Fry good???

Having grown up in the boondocks of Connecticut, I have to admit that I never even heard of a fish fry until I moved to Wisconsin. When I mentioned it to my parents, they remembered their churches having them when they were children, but the fish fry had long since vanished from the weekly dining out option.

Once I landed in Wisconsin, I began noticing signs for fish frys everywhere – local churches, family restaurants, even our neighborhood  restaurant chains had them. I have always preferred ocean fish to lake fish and figured I wouldn’t really care for it too much.  At the time, I was working at a Catholic school and on Fridays during Lent, they would begin frying up the fish before I had left for the night. One Friday, I didn’t feel like cooking and stopped to pick some up to bring home. It turned out I liked it after all.

I quickly learned that not all fish frys are created equal, and I am actually pretty picky about them. I can’t stand greasy fish or limp, sad fries.  Over time, I discovered several local fish frys that I really like and often take guests there when they come to visit.

Only recently did I discover that one of my favorite frozen custard and burger joints also has an amazing fish fry.  Culver’s, home of the butter burger, is also home to one heck of a good fish fry, in my opinion.  Even better, during Lent, you can choose from either a North Atlantic Cod or Northwoods Walleye fish fry. (The cod is available year round, while the walleye is a Lenten special.)  If you haven’t yet tried the fish fry at Culver’s, I encourage you to stop in and give it a try!

  2. I am counting down the days until Culvers’ brings their walleye back. I visit once a week and have the 3 piece dinner each time. I think it’s the best walleye around. Tender, delicious flavor, and the perfect crispy batter. Can’t wait!

  3. I’ve tried Culvers in Florida and we have two near where I live. Best fried fish since Arthur Treacher’s.
