5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day with Kids
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide which occurs on April 22nd. Earth Day is a day to show your support for the protection of our environment. While many people have opted to go green and live an environmentally conscious lifestyle daily, others take part in celebrating Earth Day once per year. It’s a time to partake in various events that occur all over the world and teach your children how to be more aware of what harms our environment.
If you are looking for a few good ways to celebrate Earth Day with kids this year, have no fear, here are five ways you can celebrate Earth Day with kids:
Ride a Bike or Walk
Make a family pledge that not a single member of the family drives or rides in a vehicle for the day. Take a walk or ride a bike to school, stores and/or work to as a means to save the environment from the harmful fumes our vehicles put out. If you must travel further away from home, consider taking a bus or train already running for passengers that day.
Start a Compost Pile
Even better, create a worm home. Worms will serve a great purpose when it comes to creating a compost pile. Have your kids research how to start a worm farm. Once they have this established and it’s time, you can use them in your compost pile. Compost is a natural way to fertilize your garden all summer long and reduces the waste sent to the local landfill.
Attend an Earth Day Fair
There are many Earth Day Fairs all over the world, find one that is local to you. Go as a family and enjoy environmentally friendly music as well as see demonstrations of green products and maybe even see some wild animals as part of a wildlife refuge demonstration. Some Earth Day Fairs have people giving speeches about topics that concern the environment too.
Start a Garden
Earth Day occurs towards the end of April which is the perfect time to start an indoor garden. Take the kids out to purchase the necessary equipment and work to create an indoor garden together. Select a sunny location within your home to place the indoor garden. You can have the kids use this as a science experiment where they document the plants’ growth each week via an illustrated photo.
Upcycle Household Trash
Have a fun day of going around your home collecting items that you can upcycle into something else. Perhaps use an old coffee container as a pot for the plants in your indoor garden. Other ideas are making toy drums or maracas out of recyclable items in your home. There are so many cute crafty ideas you can come up with when you grab household junk and think about how to upcycle it.

Some great ideas. We usually pick up trash in our town as our way to celebrate and give back for Earth Day. We also compost all year round.
We are going to spend Earth Day planting a garden. I think that is a great way to spend it. I think homegrown foods are much better and healthier for you. Plus it cuts down on pesticides.
