Mommy, remember when I was in your tummy??

Between just coming off a year when two of Little J’s teachers had babies and his upcoming birthday, Little J has suddenly gotten all reminiscent about when I was pregnant with him.
Suddenly, sentences that start with “Mommy, remember when I was in your tummy…” are popping up on a regular basis.

The funny thing is, he claims to remember it. Some of “his memories” are things he has heard us talk about: “Mommy, remember when I kicked so hard I broke your rib? I was just practicing for soccer.”
Some of the the “memories” make me scratch my head for a minute: “When I was in your tummy it was all echo-y in there. Things sounded weird.”

My favorite is (usually in response to being told he can’t do something because he is not old enough): “But Mommy, I was a grown up before I was in your tummy.” I actually got a chill down my spine the first time he said that.

But today was the winner. We are in line at the post office and he is starting with the whole “I want to be back in your tummy ’cause it’s warm in there and it’s cold out here” and then proceeds to trick me into picking him up so that he can try to CLIMB BACK IN with a whole audience watching. (Luckily, he assumed the way to get back in Mommy’s tummy was through my mouth – this could have gone a whole different way.)

The eighty year old lady in line behind me almost needed medical attention she was laughing so hard.

  1. Did he really break your rib? Seriously? Youch!
What a cutie. I think kids love to think of being in their moms belly because it just sounds so safe and cozy. My boys talk about it pretty often too.

  2. LOL!! Hilarious! I probably would have needed medical attention had I been in line behind you too!! 🙂 How cute.

  3. Yep – he really did break my rib. Of course they couldn’t do anything about it as I was still expanding. I was worried it would impact my ability to push, but the epidural took care of that!

On a happy note, I can often tell when it is going to rain 🙂

  8. Love it.
I remember having a similar conversation with my son about a baby being in the mommy’s tummy.
“You mean the mommy EATS the baby??!!”
