Does YOUR kid like vegetables?
In fact, since he was a baby until he turned about four, LJ would eat all of the veggies on his plate first and then hit the meat and carbs last. I’ll admit, I was the envy of many of my friends.
Apparently, karma has a cruel sense of humor because LJ has decided that green veggies are now the enemy. Not only does he resist eating them, he is on the constant lookout for green vegetables that might be sneaking into his food in disguise. He even turned down Veggie Booty!
So, I have had to get sneaky. And maybe stretch the truth a bit (you can call it telling a few lies if you want to).
I blend up veggies (especially green ones) and put them in everything – his smoothies, pasta sauce, even brownies. The Sneaky Chef is my new bible!
I’ve also taken to exaggerating the benefits of eating vegetables. They make you as strong as Superman and as fast as Roadrunner. The give you x-ray vision and will make you grow taller than Daddy. Somehow, I think God will cut me some slack on these little white lies.
My last tactic is to come up with the best tasting presentation for vegetables. If it means putting cheese sauce on the broccoli to get LJ to eat it, that’s fine. If it means bringing him to Noodles & Company because the veggies there magically taste better, that’s cool too. I even got him to eat the new Asparagus and Lemon linguine dish there. It’s great if you haven’t tried it yet, but then again – I’ve never found a Noodle’s dish I didn’t like!
So, what techniques do you use to get your kids to eat their vegetables? Or is it a battle that you’ve given up on? Got any sneaky tips to share???
