Our Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure House Party for Wii

This past weekend, we had the opportunity to try out a new Wii game for kids – Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure.  Since we knew nothing about it, we decided to open it up and get acquainted with the ins and outs of the game before the actual party day.  There’s nothing worse than having a bunch of kids anxious to play while the adults try and figure out what is going on.

Turns out that we had nothing to worry about.  The party pack included a video that set up the back story of the game.  The short version is that the “bad guy” kicked all of the heroes out of Skyland and sent them to earth where they are shrunken and frozen.  Putting the “interaction figures” on the portal moves them back into Skyland and brings them to life.

Once we started playing the game on the Wii, I immediately decided I liked it better than many of the other Wii games that LJ plays for several reasons.  First, most of the verbiage that appears on the screen is read by a narrator.  LJ is a good reader, but between how fast text tends to disappear and the excitement of the game, he can get pretty frustrated when he’s trying to save the world and has to stop and concentrate on reading something important.

Second, the game is not overly difficult.  It gives you lots of clues about where to find things and what to do with your controller.  LJ loves the Lego games on the Wii (Batman, Star Wars) but I can’t tell you how many times he has gotten completely frustrated by them – not enough clues, etc.  He would ask Jay or me to help him and even WE couldn’t figure out what to do!  That never happened with this game, yet it held his interest.

Third, when a character gets beat up or hurt, it doesn’t die.  It simply lies down and “needs to rest”.  A minor issue – granted – but it won points with this mom!!

The game itself is very interactive.  You can change characters by putting different figures onto the “portal” which glows in a sort of otherworldly fashion.  LJ loved that it wasn’t just a video game, but incorporated action figures and even trading cards.  As a boy who loves all three of those things, he was in absolute heaven to find a game that included all of them.

Despite a few guests dropping out due to the nasty stomach bug going around (we had it the weekend before), the kids had a blast playing Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure and all gave it a unanimous “thumbs up”!

I was provided with a copy of the game and other promotional items to facilitate the party and my review.  All opinions expressed are my own.
